Why start with gold?
1. The market supports it. This year, gold futures and options trading hit an all-time high daily volume twice at CME, and gold futures themselves are a globally top-tier liquid asset with millions of ounces traded daily. They are taking a position to push weightless gold at a time when the narrative around gold is strong.
2. From an on-chain perspective, tokenized gold has grown to about $2.9 billion as of the end of September, and the trading volumes of leading players like XAUT and PAXG are also hitting record highs. Since it's already a category with demand, initial distribution, collateral, and borrowing are easier to manage.
They proved the flywheel by layering short-term treasury yields with thBILL on-chain, and by depositing and borrowing in @arbitrum DeFi, you can even earn DRIP incentives. The official documents and blog define thBILL as 'a basket of short-term U.S. Treasury securities from regulated issuers' and summarize the app and exchange integrations.
In other words, since they have already implemented stable returns and immediate composability, expanding into gold feels natural.
