Reading the report at the end of this thread:
A security feature was disabled without the Aero/Velo team's knowledge that should have prevent this attack AND an employee at a partner of the DNS provider was compromised to carry out the attack.
Honestly not sure what could have been done differently by the team besides using a different provider (they are switching after this incident).
Good response by many teams involved to mitigate!
