New York-based crypto venture capital firm Archetype has raised $100 million in funding, expanding its strategic focus to the Asian and European markets

Archetype, a leading early-stage crypto venture capital firm in New York, announced today that its third fund, Archetype III, has raised more than $100 million. This round of investors covers well-known institutions in the United States, Asia and Europe. These include sovereign wealth funds, top university endowments, pension funds, large family offices, global institutions, and the founders of several unicorns.

Archetype was founded by Ash Egan, who founded ConsenSys' venture capital arm (now independent as ConsenSys Mesh with over $1 billion in AUM) and was in charge of cryptocurrency investments at Boston-based veteran fund Accomplice ($2.5 billion under management). Its early portfolio includes several star projects, including Bison Trails (renamed Coinbase Cloud after being acquired by Coinbase), Chainalysis, Balancer, Near, Dapper Labs, and Coinlist.

Archetype's overall assets under management currently stand at $350 million. While continuing to deepen the New York ecosystem (the institution settled in New York as the first crypto team in 2021), it is accelerating its global layout and actively investing in and empowering the world's top crypto entrepreneurs and institutions.

Asia has become the core of its globalization strategy. Archetype will leverage its deep Asian roots to accelerate the adoption and adoption of crypto technology in the region. Its long-term backers include Asia's leading sovereign wealth fund, one of China's largest family offices, and the co-founder of a leading Chinese venture capital firm with more than $8 billion under management.

Archetype partner Danny Sursock has deep ties to China, and he and partner Katherine Wu both grew up in China. As the first member of the company's start-up period, Danny now leads investment in the AI field; Katherine was previously the head of Coinbase Ventures and now serves as the COO of Ethereum Domain Name Service (ENS). Based on the core team's strong family ties to Hong Kong (Danny, Ash and Katherine all have family members in Hong Kong), the core team plans to further increase its field investment in Asia.

In addition to the core team of 10 people, Archetype has also assembled a research team with deep industry experience, including: Nick Pai, CTO of Across and senior engineer at UMA Protocol; David Wong, co-founder of zkSecurity and former head of security at Meta's Diem (formerly Libra); Andrew Hong, founder of Herd and former principal engineer at Dune Analytics; and Will Kantaros, CTO of Decent (recently acquired by MoonPay).

Archetype's third fund has invested in a number of undisclosed key projects and continues to expand its leading portfolio, including:

  • Ether Machine: Ethereum DAT company with a market capitalization of more than $2 billion (core investor).

  • US Bitcoin Corp (now Hut8): A $4 billion Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin mining and AI computing company (Series A/B investor)
